WHAT TO KNOW PRIOR TO CHOLESTEROL BLOOD TESTING
The following points will help ensure that your blood chemistry test results will be as accurate as possible.
Fasting:
Do not eat anything for at least twelve hours prior to your blood test. You can take your medications with water only. Drink no coffee or tea the morning of your blood test. You should avoid alcohol for two or three days before your test.
Exercise:
A temporary rise in cholesterol levels can be realized – as much as 10% to 15% - for up to an hour after exercise has ceased. Avoid vigorous exercise for two to three hours before your blood test.
Medications:
Any new medications you are taking at the time of the test should be recorded and discussed with a physician.
Illness:
Pregnancy, recent heart attack or surgery, and infectious or inflammatory illness can alter blood cholesterol levels. Pregnancy and illness causes various increases and decreases in the concentrations of the blood. A heart attack can decrease certain levels in the blood and level out a new lower plateau. If any of these conditions apply to you, please contact your physician.
Body position:
Sit quietly for at least ten minutes prior to your test. While prone, your blood becomes diluted and test results can be altered if your blood is drawn while standing.
Lab Locations:
Your test may be done at any lab of your choice that accepts your insurance. Just take your blood work prescription with you, and your results will automatically be sent to your physician. Mercy Fairfield Hospital’s lab does blood work on a first-come, first-served basis, no appointment necessary.
